Portrait Marine Serre

Marine Serre is a young designer based in Paris. Prior to the launch of her brand, Marine graduated from La Cambre Mode[s] with highest honors and became intimately acquainted with the inner workings of the fashion industry through a series of internships and positions at Alexander McQueen, Maison Margiela, Dior and Balenciaga. In 2017, however, her own narrative became too hard to ignore when her RADICAL CALL FOR LOVE collection was simultaneously selected for the Hyères Festival, the ANDAM Prize and the LVMH Prize. Before winning the latter in June ’17, she counted Dover Street Market, Nordstrom and SSENSE among her stockists. In October, she introduced a capsule collection titled CORNERSTONES for Spring/Summer ’18, coinciding with the establishment of her namesake label.

Marine Serre and her team then settled in the studio at the heart of Paris, where they began plotting for her first show. Though she keeps her newest designs shrouded in mystery, Marine sticks to her hybrid, thickly-referenced approach : absorbing and combining codes from radically different worlds while still choosing to ignore the boundaries between ready-to-wear, couture, tailoring and sportswear.

The new collection reflects an increasing awareness of the dynamics between production and consumer that she herself experiences with her label. It also develops a rougher futuristic mystique : a new-functionalist “FutureWear”, as her crew calls it. Between the clash of references, tensions combine and evolve, upcycled used garments are revived into fresh pieces. Utilitarian staples are tweaked and refined, while the pared-down suppleness of athleticwear still pervades her hybrid designs.

Marine Serre is currently stocked at Dover Street Market, Joyce, Opening Ceremony, the Broken Arm, H Lorenzo and Galeries Lafayette – among many other stores.
